What Is Dental Bonding?

In the simplest terms possible, dental bonding is the use of a composite resin (tooth colored) that is applied to the surface of an individual tooth in order to address everything from decay and damage to cosmetic issues like shape or discoloration. In fact, our dental bonding specialist can use this treatment to remedy the following issues:

  • Broken, chipped or cracked teeth
  • Decayed teeth (typically this is for surface decay on the face of a tooth)
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth that are deeply stained and unable to be whitened
  • Teeth that are unevenly sized, such as too short
  • Gapped teeth
  • Teeth that are suffering from root exposure due to gum recession
  • As a superior option to outdated amalgam (metal) fillings

The way that dental bonding works is incredibly simple. The tooth is usually prepared, such as a decayed tooth having the decay removed and treated, and then the resin used as a durable and naturally colored filling. For almost all other applications, a tooth must have its enamel treated to make it more effective for bonding (usually by roughening the surface). Then the matching resin is applied and shaped as needed and hardened with a special light. The final step is to polish and finish the shaping to address any cosmetic issues.

Keep in mind that bonding also stabilizes and restores teeth that are damaged by disease, injury or decay, and this makes it a restorative option for some, as well.
